Setting margins in MS Word

By default, MS Word defaults to the default page margins (2.5cm around the entire page). However, individual colleges / universities have their own margin requirements. These requirements are specified in their methodological guidelines / guidelines.

The most important here is the left edge, which is wider than the other edges (usually 3.5 – 4 cm). The reason for this is that the final work can be bound well to the hardcover. In the following instructions, we will advise you on how to quickly and easily set your own borders as required by the university / university.

Our tip: Setting the required page margins is part of the formatting of your papers. We will be happy to help you and format your work for you.

1. Original page margin settings

As mentioned above, by default, MS Word defaults to the following default margins:

  • Top: 2.5 cm,
  • Bottom: 2.5 cm,
  • Left: 2.5 cm
  • Right: 2.5cm,
  • Back: 0 cm.

2. View and set page margins

To view and set your own margins, see the “Page Layout” → “Margins” → “Custom Margins” tab (see the following figure).

Then the “Page Setup” window will pop up to resize the page margins. The following margins will be set for our model example:

  • Top: 2.5 cm,
  • Bottom: 2.0 cm
  • Left: 3.5 cm,
  • Right: 2.0cm
  • Back: 0 cm.

3. Check the page margin changes

After saving the changes, custom margins are set, which can be checked, for example, on the “ruler” (see the following figure).
